As of June 30, 2006 Michigan schools are required to assess and report their 8th grade students' achievement of technology literacy to Michigan Electronic Grant System (MEGS). Each school must report the number of students assessed and the number of students deemed technologically literate.
May 2009 - Memo from MI Department of Education - includes 8th Grade Technology Literacy reporting requirements (pdf)

Standards for Technology Literacy

Technology literacy is defined as the ability to responsibly use appropriate technology to communicate, solve problems, and access, manage, integrate, evaluate, and create information to improve learning in all subject areas and to acquire lifelong knowledge and skills in the 21st century.
National Educational Technology Standards (NETS)
Michigan Educational Technology Standards (METS)

Assessment Method

Currently, the State of Michigan is not requiring a specific type of assessment test for technology literacy skills. Each local district will make the determination of how student technology literacy is determined.
The Michigan Department of Education suggests that any of the following can be used to demonstrate technology literacy.
Knowledge Based Assessments:
Performance Based Assessments:
  • METS Checklist (MS Word Doc)
  • Teacher observations
  • Successful completion of project(s)
  • Successful completion of Computer Literacy class
Portfolio Based Assessments:
  • Student reflective narratives
  • Digital or paper portfolio
