An Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) is a written agreement in the form of guidelines, outlining the terms and conditions of technology and/or Internet use. AUPs often include rules for online behavior and access privileges as well as consequences for not following the policy.

AUPs are a required component of each district's Educational Technology Plan. By having students and their parent/guardian sign this document, school districts are able to enforce technology use guidelines as well protect themselves against improper or malicious use of district technology resources.
Your school AUP should reflect changes in technology and the requirements of the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA).

The Virginia Department of Education has developed Acceptable Use Policies: A Handbook to guide schools in the process of developing AUPs. This site provides many examples. If your district is writing or rewriting its AUP, use this resource!

Student Understanding

Not only is it important that districts develop AUPs, but it is also essential that students understand the policy and are able to apply its regulations to typical classroom situations.

Because of the legal language, AUPs can be hard to understand, especially for elementary students. CyberSmarthas developed an AUP Lesson Plan which includes student activity sheets to help younger students become aware of what their school's policies are.
